Lube is the most underrated product in any bedroom drawer. It adds comfort, reduces friction and makes every sensation smoother. But not every lube suits every situation, so here’s the quick guide.
Water-based lubricant
The all-rounder. Water-based lube is safe with condoms and with toys of every material, washes off easily and won’t stain sheets. The trade-off is that it can dry out faster, so you may need to reapply – a drop of water often revives it.
Best for: first-timers, toy play, use with condoms.
Silicone-based lubricant
Silky and long-lasting. Silicone lube stays slippery much longer than water-based and works in the shower or bath. It’s condom-safe, but it can damage silicone toys, so test on a small area first or keep it for toy-free play.
Best for: longer sessions, water play, massage.
Oil-based lubricant
Rich and luxurious, and ideal for massage and solo play. Be careful though: oil breaks down latex, so never use oil-based lube with latex condoms. It can also be harder to wash out of fabric.
Best for: massage and condom-free solo play.
Specialty formulas
Warming, cooling, flavoured and desensitising lubes add an extra layer of sensation. If you have sensitive skin, try a small amount first and choose formulas without glycerin or parabens where possible.
The short version
If you only buy one bottle, make it a quality water-based lube. It works with everything.
